FAQ

Although my focus is on weight loss, I am going to cover all sorts of health issues: alternative medicine, fitness, diet, medicine, herbs, vitamins, atkins diet, zone diet, body building, and more -- all in the light of research published in peer-reviewed medical journals. With science as our guide, we can avoid the voodoo theories as well as the anti-supplement propaganda of the medical establishment. The path to health and happiness is science, self reliance, and freedom. And that's what this site is all about.

Personally, I don't waste my time reading health literature that is not referenced to medical studies. In fact, thanks to the power of the Internet, health writers can now go beyond merely providing references. Thus, my posts (DrumLib's Posts) are fully referenced with links to PubMed medical abstracts (summaries). In addition, my posts are integrated with a Document Retrieval service. You can get FULL-TEXT medical articles -- delivered to your door -- for only $3.50. And shipping is free (in the 48 states). This is a major bargain -- other services charge 2 to 5 TIMES that much. And now, thanks to PayPal, you can use your credit card -- even if you buy only one article! It's as easy as e-mail!

This site also has a small (but growing) medical Dictionary. Actually, I call it "Dictionary & Notes" because in some cases it goes way beyond the normal definition. Although this is not designed to replace a real medical dictionary, I believe that linking my posts to this dictionary will enhance them and make them more accessible. It can also help people who are trying to understand full-text medical articles. The FAQ contains more detailed information about the site and the Links section contains links to medical journals and a bunch of interesting and useful stuff. Last and certainly least is the Terms and Privacy section, which contains the legal mumbo jumbo.

Tell Me About The Site.

Well, unless otherwise noted, all of the information on this site is written by DrumLib (Drummer & Libertarian). If you have read my posts in the newsgroups, you know that I emphasize the importance of checking references and reading the full-text of medical articles rather than relying on what writers and journalists say about health issues. The problem is that many people who have the greatest need for real medical information are not physically able to go to a medical library and photocopy articles. So, I looked around at all the document retrieval services and they were WAY too expensive for anyone doing serious research. I had to find someone who was willing to start a document retrieval service that would be dedicated to helping people at the lowest possible cost.

Believe it or not, I succeeded -- Selma's document retrieval service is a new business that was started for exactly that purpose. You can get FULL-TEXT medical articles -- delivered to your door -- for only $3.50. And shipping is free (in the 48 states). This is a major bargain -- other services charge 2 to 5 TIMES that much.

That's definitely less expensive than other services, but it would still cost a lot to do serious research.

Yes, unfortunately that's true. If you are able, the best thing to do is to go to a nearby medical library where photocopies cost about 6-10 cents per page. A document retrieval service, however, has to pay someone a fair wage for their time and travel. That makes it difficult to get the price as low as we would like. We have bounced around some ideas but we will have to wait and see how things go.

Are there any ideas that you would like to share?

Well, I would like to be able to help people with massive obesity get full-text articles at the lowest possible cost. There is so much prejudice -- even in the medical community -- against the massively obese that I believe self-study is the only hope for many people. I know what it is like to be housebound by obesity and I know that I would have been dead long ago if I had not started studying medicine. But I was lucky -- ECA works very well for me. However, some people do not respond as well and they face the difficult task of figuring out their particular condition. Something HAS to be done to help these people.

One idea that we have discussed is signing up with some quality affiliate programs so we can use the profits to lower the cost of document retrieval for massively obese people. But we really don't want to be in the position of deciding who "qualifies" for a special rate. Perhaps we could offer a discount for large orders. I don't know. Actually, I'm the wrong person to discuss the business stuff with. Besides, at this time, it is all totally speculative because when you start a web site, there is no way to know if it will be popular or profitable. All you can do is see what happens.

What do mean when you say that you're not the right person to discuss the business stuff with?

That does sound kind of senile, doesn't it? But it's true. I (DrumLib) am not involved with any of the business stuff at drumlib.com. It's really just a logical division of labor; Selma takes care of ALL the business stuff so more of my time is free to research and write. And, since my posts are free, I do not have to write on a schedule. Thus, if I temporarily get too busy with my music to post new material, I can wait until I have something worth posting. There is far too much mediocre stuff written about obesity already.

Are you serious about posting new information?

Absolutely, I'm just being realistic about my time. Also, I do not believe that serious research can be done on a strict deadline. However, I want keep building this site until it contains so much solid medical evidence about the genetic/metabolic basis of obesity that anyone who spends time here will be transformed in some way. Hopefully, prejudiced people will learn enough that their attitudes cannot help but evolve. Hopefully, obese people will learn some rarely-mentioned facts about their disease and end up feeling better about themselves. Perhaps some obese people will even find the missing piece of knowledge that gives them victory over this disease.
